Get Involved

Open Door Books is constantly searching for new volunteers! Our main activities are as follows:

  • Sending boxes of books to prison libraries throughout Canada
  • Filling individual book requests from prisoners
  • Using resources such as the internet which are unavailable to prisoners in order to perform research requested by incarcerated individuals

If you would like to get involved, email us at

Donate books!

We are always looking for donations of paperback books. We especially welcome books on such topics as Black and Indigenous history, new fiction/bestsellers (John Grisham, Stephen King, et cetera), dictionaries, self-help/how-to, and law. Books cannot have staples, contain notes or underlining, or have missing covers. We also ask that you only donate books that are in relatively good shape and are not too outdated. Thank you!

Please bring donations to our library at QPIRG-Concordia:
1500 de Maisonneuve West, suite 204. Hours are Mon-Thurs, 12-6pm.

Are you authorized to send books to inmates? In Vermont? or Alabama?
I live in Montreal but correspond with inmates in those states.
I am interested in what you are doing and would like to know more.

Unfortunately due to budget restraints we cannot send many books to prisoners in US prisons, however we have just posted a link in our new Resources section to a list of active Books to Prisoners programs in the US that you can contact.
